Objectives:

As the contemporary scientific discussion on the evaluation of cultural projects evolves with regards to methods and theory, we aim to introduce an interdisciplinary perspective to fill the gaps regarding research and practice.

The seminar plans to support the network of different stakeholders in the cultural sector and encourage a debate between academia and practisioners focused on measurement and evaluation in culture.

Profile of the contributions:

We would like to present “measurable” based on case studies in the field of culture and cultural projects. All case studies, evaluation reports, impact surveys in cultural management and cultural policy from the perspectives of economics, sociology, cultural studies, geography, political science and anthropology are invited to participate.

Paper Proposal

Please register on the following link – as a contributing participant with a paper proposal, submitting the title and abstract until October 25, 2020. Selected contributions will be informed by October 31, 2020. Papers written in Slovak, Czech and English language will be accepted.

Outcomes

• Peer-reviewed seminar proceedings will include selected contributions submitted until December 15, 2020, and will be published in February 2021

• Recorded keynote lectures will be available on Youtube for further reference

Keynote speakers

Karol Piekarski, PhD.

Karol Piekarski is the founder and programme director at Medialab Katowice as well as being a freelance researcher, Python and Linux enthusiast. He is the author of Data-Driven Methods for City Research and Exploration (2015) and Data Culture: Attention Enhancing Algorithms (2017, in Polish). He holds a PhD in Humanities for his work on the economy of perception and strategies for reducing information overload. He has led several interdisciplinary research projects involving data processing and visualisation, e.g. Data for Culture within the Shared Cities: Creative Momentum platform diagnosing cultural and social trends in Central Europe. He is an alumni of The International Visitor Leadership Program by the U.S. State Department, and has held a visiting position in the National Centre for Geocomputation at Maynooth University (Building City Dashboards project). He is currently collaborating with several organizations, e.g. Creative Industry Košice, Goethe Institute, Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava, and teaching at Silesian University and the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice.

Mieke Renders

Mieke Renders is the Managing Director of Trans Europe Halles. Mieke was born in Belgium in 1975 and is passionate about culture and languages, having lived in several countries. She is a strong believer in the independence of cultural operators, and their capacity to self-organise in networks in order to achieve greater impact. Before she moved to Sweden, she was the general manager of the Flemish Cultural Centre ‘De Brakke Grond’ in Amsterdam and worked as the cultural attaché for Flanders House in New York. She studied physical anthropology and arts management, which led her to start off in the museum and cultural heritage field, where she worked as both a curator and project manager. Many years later, she shifted towwards the living arts and made connections between heritage and performing and visual arts. Networking is a passion, which she now develops for Trans Europe Halles.

Jan Stejskal

Jan Stejskal is the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration at the University of Pardubice. Jan is a professor in Public Economics and Services at 40 years old. He studied economics and holds a Ph.D. in regional and public economics. He works at the University of Pardubice, where he carries out his research in the field of public goods and services. Since 2012, he has been working with the Municipal Library in Prague, where he tries to answer the question of how to evaluate public services provided by public libraries. Together with his team, he has created a methodology which was implemented in the Czech Republic in many dozens of public libraries. Thanks to this methodology, libraries can better analyze their performance and efficiency. Continuous research brings a number of interesting questions, to which he enthusiastically seeks answers. These are mainly questions concerning trends and the development of the perceived value of library services in the long term, as well as methods suitable for the analysis of economic analysis of cultural goods and services.
